History and Culture of Panama


Homelife Panama Initially the territory of Panama was habituated by various indigenous people called Kuna. The first contact with Europeans happened at the year 1501, with Rodrigo de Bastidas. In the year 1502 Cristofor Columb was exploring eastern shores of Panama in his fourth travel to the New World. In the year 1513 Vasco Núñez de Balboa has crossed Isthmus of Panama and became first European that saw Pacific Ocean from Panama shores. In the year 1510 he found the colony and became governor of the region. Soon Potobelo City became a key point for transferring gold of Incas to Spain, attracting pirates to the region. Panama was found in the year 1519 and in the year 1671 Panama was disturbed by the first time by Henry Morgan that captured it and burned down.

With a fall of Spanish empire panama lost its significance and on the year 1821 it declared independence and became a part of great Colombia of Simon Bolivar. Panamanian economy wasn't doing so well but already in the year 1850 after the gold of California was discovered it grew up significantly. The Panamanian railroad was built and in 1879 has started construction of Panama Canal, that eventually became bankrupt in the year 1889.

With the great support of the United States Panama obtained its independence from Colombia in the year 1903 and in the period from 1904 to 1914 the construction of Panama Canal was finisheHomelife Panamad by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Republic of Panama finally got a total control over the Canal only by the end of 1999.

In the year 1981 Manuel Noriega came to the power in Panama, then he was accused in a drug trafficking. In the year 1989 he lost democratic elections, but refusing to accept it he declared it void. The attempt to restore the democratic governance by pro American officers failed, resulting Noriega’s declaration of war on United States, that in a turn brought US invasion to Panama.

After invasion began Panama's modern history, slow at the start up accelerating little by little and finally resulting in the one of the most developed economies in the region with a booming real estate market.

Panama always has been a multicultural country sometimes called "melting pot of races" ("crisol de razas"). With more than 3 million habitants its population consists from 67% of Mestizos, Black and Mulattos 14%, Whites 10%, Indians 6% and 3% of the people from different ethnic groups. That cultural riches makes Panamanians very respectful to the visitors as well as to another residents.

Panama is always been and will be a meeting point between various ethnic groups and races and now it is accessible from any part of the world to every traveler, always making them to feel like home, always reminding its traditions and its constant desire to evolve as a culture.
